When you give a significant other a gift, no matter how expensive or cheap it is, if they will publicly deride the gift to friends it's a bad sign.
The recipient may or may not actually like the gift but in most healthy relationships, they ACT as though they like the gift in public, if only to spare the giver embarrassment.
The best personal example I have of this is a couple I knew where the wife HATED her engagement ring and would actively complain about it. You could see the hurt in her husband's eyes.
Whether she liked it or not isn't the point. The point is that she didn't spare her husband's feelings. It's indicative of other, larger, problems. They did in fact get divorced.
